Buy N Large's captive audience are aboard star ships where they do no work. How would BNL ever create a profit from that scenario? Even if they did work, the ships are self contained environments which (as far as we know) do not produce any raw materials that they didn't leave Earth with. I guess in theory they could be mining asteroids or something, but that'd be done by robots. With the exception of intellectual property, there is nothing to be gained from having people sat in your ships consuming your products. Nothing suggests there was a great deal of research going on, nor for that matter is it suggested works of art were being produced. If anything, they had become culturally homogeneous (as predicted by Frankfurt School sociologist Theodore Adorno), wearing the same clothes, watching the same videos etc.

Great theory Mattpat but there’s one little thing you’ve got wrong. The tiny amount of space for all of the US’s landmass waste is correct however, you missed the other garbage dump. The ocean. The pacific has a floating garbage island more than twice the size of TEXAS as of today. That’ll definitely contribute to the waste in the future I’m sure.

But where do the people on the ship even get their money all the while automation is replacing every job we see? Even if they (BnL) just give the people money the people will just spend it on board the ship because where else would they be spending the money? This creates a loop where the money just flows back and forth while rescourses get drained. While yes this will take an extremely long amount of time (presumably) eventually they will run out of rescourses to keep everything going. And if the ship were to be fully self sufficient then the people aboard the ship wouldn't even use money anymore, because what is the point of money when everyone (including BnL) has everything they want, whenever they want it? There wouldn't be a point to it because now the people aboard the ship have entered a post scarcity civilization. Anyhow, good video, I thuroughly enjoyed it!
(If I made mistakes in my reasoning, which isn't an unlikely turn of events, feel free to correct me. I'd love to have some discourse.)

I've done some basic research, and the thing about developed nations producing less waste than developed ones seems to be false...
The list from which you take the map also shows this, with most industrial european nation, the united states and japan in the top 30 , (with over 192 nations); while south america and africa consistently produce less waste per capita. Kuwait is fourth, true, but Kuwait is not by any means underdeveloped as for consumption, in fact it has one of the higher GDP per capita in the world and a strong currency...
The data would seem to indicate the exact opposite, you can check for yourself here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Ll5f1wPrP4UgPtnvM1eoElMZMVgF4v3ShS5Od-aaHI0/edit#gid=0
The only other tendency is that island-nations, developed or underdeveloped, produce more waste than continental nations
But other than that, it's pretty much inequivocable. Development equals more waste.

700 years on the Axiom and they still have the resources to keep the engines running (fuel and parts for repairs) resources to keep providing food containers and clothes as well as the means to launder the clothes (water/cleaners)... access to a sufficient amount of water for their pools, liquid-based food and proper hygiene methods and even mattresses... figure with ppl as large as they are, that mattresses probably last 20 years max, so most mattresses would have been replaced 35 times in 700 years... times the growing population of the Axiom and on and on all without anyone having a job aside from the captain and at least some sort of unseen skeleton crew?
Either B&L intended to lure humanity to a space Eden where no one has to worry about anything ever again (possibly their punishment for directly facilitating the bulk of earths trash/pollution problems)...
OR the world’s major powers made the call to abandon the planet for space and B&L simply jumped in as the sole sponsor and they constantly feel the need that as sole sponsor of Space Eden, that the population be reminded of how great they are; “our very best friend” for saving the species)
With everyone being pampered every second of everyday there was no mention of an actual economy. The ship offered the new digital overlay for their suits, but even though it was a purchase option (if I recall?), loads of people just hit a button like it was a free option.
All those space bound ocean liners were meant to be a few years journey; I don’t think they were money-making ventures but they also weren’t meant to be several hundreds of years spacebound either
If anything it now feels like B&L is actually the antagonist turned protagonist.
Yes their global takeover through commercialism effectively lead to the ruining of Earth at the hands of the consumer, but then they *saved* humanity from extinction and other than apparent consequence-free obesity (aside from possible muscle atrophy) there didn’t seem to be any disease or hunger or social economic gaps... or conflict... or discrimination... 😨
THANK YOU B&L!!! You may have helped us achieve our own inevitable doom, but you saw the error of your ways and then solved ALL OTHER social economical problems that had plagued humanity for THOUSANDS of years!
So much so that there are no signs of crime, not even vandalism or bullying... no corrupt prison or political systems... just a heavy-set utopia that is so perfect that nobody appreciates it anymore.
All hail B&L; they solved all humanities problems... though they really should have been jettisoning all those monstrous trash cubes towards the sun...
B&L is evil again! They are polluting the entire solar system instead of aiming the trash at the sun or towards known black holes!

Here's the problem with the spaceships.
You technically can't turn a profit on them for very long, especially when they no longer have a way to pay (money becomes fiat from government collapse, and if everything is controlled by a company, what you end up with is a communistic-feudal system.
Of course you could squeeze some money out of people, but not for several hundred years.
The only reason I could think of is that they were maybe a little like the Vaults from Fallout and used for consumer feedback, and the Axiom, being the main ship, was probably used as a command hub of some sort as well as for monitoring.

Hey Man,
Love your channel and always watch it but I feel like you went ahead too fast because yes in hindsight buy-n-large will be the only company to sell stuff but as you said the whole ship doesn’t function with humans cleaning and selling but robots so that means no one will have a job in the movie no one until wall-e got there got out of there chair. The expenses for the whole ship and fuel to go to outer space and for the robots buy-n-large will lose profit.
Reply question or counter arguments.

Hold up. If the axiom left 700 years ago in Wall-E, there shouldn’t be anyone alive on the ship. A human being can not live for 700 years. And how have the Wall-E robots not cleaned up the entire planet by then. And why are there literally TOWERS of trash that are he size of the Empire State Building.

I don't think that it's that easy for a company to cover our planet in trash. Yes maybe they would have the ability, but there would also be a lot of environmentalists out there, who would try to stop the hole think before it even happened. People getting more and more conscious about pollution. I mean if there was a international petition to force Starbucks to get 100% recyclable coffee cups, just imagination what would happen if a company decided to literary spam our hole planet... it would become the greatest boycott in human history. And that are just the costumers there are also laws and regulations and all this stuff. An even if nobody would protest, they would bribe ANY government in the world and have complete control over every wast disposal system at least at the moment were the first people start living in a dump, they would start question it, they would think they failed and some other company would find a great idea how to deal with all the trash and the people would let them work for them instead.

Kevin Smoak

I disagree with the part of your theory about the company flipping the Earth for profit because BnL doesn’t gain any profit while people are in space. There is no exchange in currency in space and there seems to be no company representatives in space either that would benefit from all the consumerism just the fully-automated robot crew. I think that BnL was actually overthrown by the robots which tried to get rid of the humans so they can have earth to themselves and so they can slowly kill them off due to their ignorance. Either way I agree with the part of the theory about how BnL made items less “green” to motivate the humans leave.

Okay but that corporation is only successful in the first place BECAUSE of the general public. You can't have an entire population financially supporting this huge corporate entity then solely put the blame on said entity when the mass public were the ones funding it. Granted I imagine that BNL would've made it so they were the ONLY suppliers, which would make obtaining items from other companies virtually impossible, buuut the ending still suggest that humanity aren't responsible for their actions when they're the ones that created the success of BNL in the first place.

I get very uncomfortable and anxious when I think about people not being grateful for things and litter and stuff like that, so watching this and now knowing that the world is actually getting cleaner and we don't have to worry as much about the world getting completely ruined by litter or anything made a huge weight leave me, a weight that's been there for years. What an interesting theory it does make a lot of sense because u r missing one crusial thing...
Why would the boss dude of BNL want all that money if there's no way to spend it... no I think there's something bigger behind these scenes..
Here's my theory as seen in MatPats other Wall-E theory that humans are eating each other... but why would the boss of BNL allow this to happen when he told the AI thing um steering wheel to never return to earth and feed humans on this ship lies about earth and not keep them educated and allow them to eat each other... this was. because he never intended them to come back he wanted them to eat each other because then they don't become overpopulated on the ship and want to come back that extra space made from the 5 years food supply was a cover up into making enough dead bodies to feed passengers and have room maybe to hold more...
Now on to my theory in this time of planet earth there could be a population problem and he may be trying to get rid of it like in the movie Kingsmen. Now not all of the population got on to the ship so some including the boss stayed behind. Now I have no evidence to say the boss stayed on earth but I think he did. If he stayed on earth he would have so much money, that what if he made a ship like the ship that blast off into space but stayed on earth. Then he would be able to stay on earth and rule the rest of the population saying who can come in and who can't. BNL aim was not only to be rich but also a king or even a god. He got demand the people to give him all there money to go into the ship that's on earth and then control them to do what he wants... I believe this to be true because if u think about it the ship that blast off (the ship in the movie) u have to pay to get on and obviously the first people on would be higher up like the president and queen and kings of other country's and government officials they would all get first pick I reckon... with them out of they way the boss dude will have all of the money on earth and control everyone because he controls the robots and the ship that I believe was built on earth.

I think there's a key part of this mat forgot to mention. The people living on the Bn'L ships don't have any source of income as far as I can tell. The only way that Bn'L could profit off of this permanent vacation is if people could afford to buy their products whilst taking an indefinite sabbatical. This means that the only people able to board the ships were those that were incredibly rich. No middle class family is going to be able to support their children's children off their savings account. So after Bn'L ruined the Earth, they had to have left the vast majority of the world's population behind to rot in the garbage infested wasteland they'd created. But that's just a theory... a film theory

Mattpat, There's some problems with your logic:
1. If BnL controls the entire human population to get all the money, how does the average citizen get more money to pay for their services? Surely it must be recycled somehow, yet they are all pampered full-time couch potatoes living the stereotypical millennial's dream.
2. Did BnL actually have the resources to take care of earth's entire human population when they evacuated the earth? If so, they would have been able to divide and conquer, with some resources remaining on earth while other resources stayed, which would have required less effort. If not, they would not have tried to bite off more than they could chew.
3. Why didn't BnL's plan fail when its competition pointed out that they were producing more garbage and put a green spin on their products? As they say Roman garbage heap wasn't built in a day, and on a global market some sort of competition would have noticed BnL's dirty consequences and brought it up.
