When I started compositing at home I was shocked at how easy it really was! Kind of upsetting that composting isn’t a regular part of life all across the country. I’m so glad to see that is changing! And it’s amazing the difference in the weight of trash being thrown out in the video! Awesome!

In Sweden everyone has a compost bin in their home and two garbage cans. One for compost and one for trash. It is more expensive not to have a compost bin so almost everyone has one.

I am seriously astonished that before this they they would have just tossed all that leftover hummus and other food, like that's ridiculous. They work with hundreds of people, the least they could have done was offer it to someone for their lunchbreak.

What about food wasted at the industrial level- food thrown out because it doesn't meet size standards in grocery stores, for example?

I simply can't believe you can throw away that amount of food. Composting bins have been a reality for my country for ages and my town's not as rich and well organised as NYC is, yet the amount of food that goes wasted everyday by a few people only makes me sick.

I am so surprised that you weren't doing this before. This is just a normal thing just like using recycling bins and a garbage bin. It hurt my heart to hear that you guys were just throwing it in the landfills. Thats actually unacceptable but I'm glad that Tasty is finally composting. Better late than never. So how about compost bins just around the Buzzfeed building and not just for Tasty? I think that could be a great step. Like at my school, we have bins that look like these
which make it so much easier and more convenient to put everything in the right spot

Where was the solution for all the people in the country who are going hungry? Don’t get me wrong, I think composting is a great step. I do think that finding a way to make the leftovers feed some people who I am sure are struggling right outside your doors would have been even more beneficial. Especially when you have so much waste. There was even a moment there when I thought you guys were going to feed someone else, and you just fed the ungrateful people in your office. All that to say, I think you could’ve tried harder.

Is composting not supposed to be a regular thing? Here in toronto, the city charge extra for a larger garbage can (which means more garbage) to limit people's production of garbage, and encourage people to recycle and compost. I'm sure a lot of cities do, but why don't people?

The idea of "eating the food is the best way to reduce food waste" is not 100% true. Food waste is not just throwing out food, it also means eating more food than you actually need. The best way to reduce waste is giving the food to someone in need.

When I thought of food waste I thought of egg shells, banana peels, coffee grounds, the occasional leftovers in Tupperware that was forgotten and grew mold. Not throwing away perfectly fine food? This was so painful to see so many people doing this. I can't even imagine throwing away good food like that. I'm also so used to using my garbage disposal in the sink, not throwing it in the trash bin. Anywho, rant over :3

NYC has been pretty behind on environmental measures (and I mean more than neoliberal park developments)...I don't know if it's because it's such a big and old city or our bureaucracy just struggles to get things done. My neighborhood in Brooklyn finally got compost collection about a year ago and I've been so pleased to see my family and neighbors grow more conscientious about how trash can be sorted. For context, my parents are immigrants who have always taught me to make as much use as possible out of our resources, especially with food. (To this day, it baffles me how people can leave more than half of the food on their plate uneaten when I have been habituated to finish every last grain of rice.)
The other thing about being an immigrant in NYC though, is that you are always on the grind and time and mental energy is really scarce. After coming back home from a college where everyone composted, it was so hard to go back to tossing all our food scraps in with regular waste. I suggested to my parents to set aside compostables and bring them to collection centers (like the farmers' market) each week ourselves but they were hard to convince. We're not in a particularly gentrified neighborhood with farmers' markets close by, and the gas and time necessary to make a change that didn't seem to immediately concern their daily lives just was not worth the effort for them. Now that compost collection comes to everyone, the process is much simpler and the details about what kind of trash goes where has been slowly demystified for them. (It's still not always easy when recycling rules vary so greatly in different places around the US.) I used to think it would take years before the immigrant and low income members of our community could be mobilized to recycle better but you just need to give people the infrastructure!
P.S. ...um this producer, Merle is beautiful 💀 and makes me feel extra gay

This... shocked me. In my beautiful country of Finland (in Europe, just in case someone doesn't know) EVERYONE composts. All bigger apartment blocks are required to have a compost bin (a big one where everyone living in the block can dump their biowaste and it's collected once or twice a week). Most offices have composts, even if they don't work with foods, just because people want to throw their apple cores and whatnots where they belong. It has ALWAYS been very clear to me and everyone else over here that you recycle. It's not something special, nothing grand. It's just how things are done. So it really pisses me off that a big, 'civilized' country like the US doesn't do it's share in taking care of this Earth.

Wow. Is this what most of America is like? (Genuine question, not an insult to Americans)
I find it disgusting just how much food waste there was, even after they got compost set up. People were lazily throwing stuff in the trash instead of walking slightly out of their way.
You can tell the privilege of people tossing perfectly good food away when there are starving people sleeping on the streets. I'm going to guess they've never had to worry about going hungry, had to choose between food and rent, or done desperate things just to survive.
I've always hated food waste.
I shudder to think of what the recycling (or lack of it) is like in their office.

My goodness...this is crazy. My biggest problem right now is not being able to throw leftovers and eating it, just to avoid wastage. From our childhood, we have been taught to take only as much food we can eat and reminded repeatedly about how kids in other parts of the world are starving. And as a grown up now, i am usually finishing up the leftovers (if it is not sufficient enough to be a meal next day) because throwing good food makes me feel terrible. It also makes me fat unfortunately!😫

Wait... does that mean that it isn't normal for Americans to have composting bins in their kitchen? I'm 25 (from Switzerland) and I grew up having a compost bin in our kitchen, and in all my friends kitchens too. I can't believe that there are countries where this isn't normal, it's so simple!

Now we need to get grocery stores, restaurants, and other food services to do this as well. If you know someone who works in the kitchen or works a buffet for an event.. a ton of food is thrown out. My boyfriend got so upset at n event where he was working the buffet because at the end of the night large buffet style metal pans that were untouched had to be thrown away. They weren't allowed to take leftovers and there was a homeless shelter a couple of streets away. It is so common and so disgusting how much food is wasted when there is hungry people who would love it.

I get their point but it’s not like we get the food for free. We pay for it so others whom make it can keep producing it. It’s not like we’re single handedly ruining people’s lives because we throw away OUR money. There will always be the less fortunate people in the world and we can’t change our day to day lifestyle drastically just because people are starving. I bet everyone watching and commenting on this video saying, “oh My GOD! I’m gonna recycle everything and start giving my leftovers to the homeless!” Is sitting there doing nothing.
